Rugby Tours to Jersey. Jersey is a new destination for Irish Rugby Tours and is the the largest of the Channel Islands, located closer to France than the UK.
Part of the common travel area and the warmest of the British Isles, Jersey has a rich history moulded over time by ice age visitors, occupying forces, languages and traditions. These islands are the last remnants of the medieval Duchy of Normandy that held sway in both France and England.
The islands remained loyal to the English crown after the return of Normandy to France in 1204 and have enjoyed self-government since.
Unsurprisingly, considering its French and English roots, Jersey feels like a patchwork of the British Isles and nearby Normandy.
The Channel Island were the only part of the British Isles to be occupied by German forces during World War II.
With the island represented on the rugby front by the Jersey Reds, there are plenty of clubs on the island who are more than happy to accommodate any touring team that would like to visit the island.
Rugby has been played in Jersey since 1879; the club acquired their home near Jersey Airport in 1961, and opened a new clubhouse in 1994. Promoted five times between 2005 – 2012 Jersey now play in the Greene King IPA Championship, the second tier of English rugby.
