It’s also home to a living Maori village and the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute, with traditional wood carving and weaving schools.  The Rotorua region has 17 lakes, known collectively as the Lakes of Rotorua. Fishing, waterskiing, swimming and other water activities are popular in summer.

Known as a spa town and major tourist resort since the 1800s, many of its buildings hint at this history.  Government Gardens, close to the lake-shore at the eastern edge of the town, are a particular point of pride.  Rotorua Museum of Art and History is housed in the large Tudor-style bath house building.  You will also find the Art Deco style Blue Baths, noted for their embrace of mixed sex bathing in the 1930s, remain open today.

Whakarewarewa Village is the legacy and home of the Tūhourangi Ngāti Wāhiao people.

They have been sharing their unique way of life with visitors from around the world for over two hundred years.

The village is able to trace their ancestry back to the Te Arawa people who first occupied the valley in 1325.

Since the early 1800’s they have been hosting and welcoming guests into their homes and backyards.
