Hadrians Wall

Once dividing England and Scotland, running from the East coast to the West coast of the country, Hadrian’s Wall still stands today.

Work begun in AD 122 in the reign of the emperor Hadrian. It ran from the banks of the River Tyne near the North Sea to the Solway Firth.

At the same time it was the northern limit of the Roman Empire. Immediately north were the lands of the northern Ancient Britons, including the Picts.

Regarded as a British cultural icon, Hadrian’s Wall is one of Britain’s major ancient tourist attractions.

It was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

Newcastle Castle

The castle is a medieval fortification in the city, built on the site of the fortress which gave the City of Newcastle its name.

There are some prominent remaining structures on the site.

These include the castle keep, the castle’s main fortified stone tower and the black gate, which is its fortified gatehouse.

Built between 1172-1177 by the eldest son of William-the-Conqueror, this castle marks the dead centre of the city.

Angel of The North

Standing over 20 meters tall, with a wing span of over 54 meters, The Angel of the North is there to welcome visitors and locals to the city.

The Angel of the North is a contemporary sculpture, designed by Antony Gormley.

Completed in 1998, it is a steel sculpture of an angel, 20 metres tall, with wings measuring 54 metres across.

The wings do not stand straight sideways but are angled 3.5 degrees forward. Gormley did this to create a sense of embrace.

The angel like much of Gormley’s other work is based on a cast of his body.

According to Gormley, the significance of an angel was three-fold: first, to signify that beneath the site of its construction, coal miners worked for two centuries.

Secondly, to grasp the transition from an industrial to an information age. Finally, to serve as a focus for our evolving hopes and fears.

The sculpture is also humorously known by some local people as the “Gateshead Flasher” because of its location and appearance.
