Central Park

This part-park, part-museum, part-concert hall swallows central Manhattan.  Many of the city’s most notable attractions are situated next to it or within its limits history.

Travellers insist that you shouldn’t just pass through Central Park on your way to another place.  The 843-acre green space is a favourite of New Yorkers and tourists, you can come here to exercise, dine, go to the zoo and more.

Central Park is fantastic year-round and is a must-see for anyone coming to New York.  People may not realise Central Park has several hidden treasures.

Almost everyone has a positive impression of the park.  No one has quite the same experience or recommends that you do quite the same thing.

Empire State Building

New York City dictates that you must swing by this landmark structure in midtown Manhattan.

Despite the hefty crowds and the long lines, recent visitors insist that you won’t be sorry.

In fact, taking a trip to the top of the Empire State Building is either the perfect way to begin or end your Big Apple excursion.  On a clear day you’ll be able to the see the city’s major highlights some 1,050 feet beneath you.

Looking up at the art deco skyscraper from the ground is also pretty spectacular, especially in the evenings when there’s a little mood lighting.

The Empire State Building’s tower lights have maintained a tradition of changing colour to recognise various occasions and organisations throughout the year.

Statue of Liberty

This brightly shining beacon draws visitors year-round.

France donated the copper statue as a gift from the people of France to the people of the United States in 1886.

Designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and its metal framework was built by Gustave Eiffel.

The Statue of Liberty is a figure of Libertas, a robed Roman liberty goddess.  She holds a torch above her head with her right hand and in her left hand carries Tabula Ansata.

Inscribed in Roman numerals is “JULY IV MDCCLXXVI”, the date of the U.S. Declaration of Independence.

A broken shackle and chain lay at her feet as she walks forward, commemorating the recent national abolition of slavery.

The statue became an icon of freedom and of the United States plus a national park tourism destination.

Ellis Island

For 62 years, this was the United States’ main immigration entry point and many U.S. citizens have at least one ancestor who passed through here.

Most agree that to truly appreciate this historic site you’ll have to take one of the Cruise ferries over for a visit.

On the island, swing by the Main Building and the Immigration Museum housed inside.  Stop by the “Treasures from Home” exhibit to peruse some of the family heirlooms and keepsakes that immigrants brought over on their journey.

While you are there do a little digging on your own family tree at the American Family Immigration History Centre.
