Blarney Castle

Blarney Castle and the Blarney Stone, everyone wants to kiss the legendary stone.

When lying on your back and head back don’t look down. It’s a long way down but don’t worry you’re in safe hands.

The castle that visitors see today is the 3rd castle to be built on the site.

The first castle was built around the 10th century and was a wooden fort.

In 1210 the second castle was built this time of stone and then the present castle was built in 1446.

Blarney means persuasive elegance, being able to flatter or charm someone.

It comes from the Irish word Bhlarna which means little field, but we all like the first meaning.

Cork Gaol

Visit this old castle like gaol and imagine what it was like for the inmates to live here in Cork City Gaol.

The gaol was built in 1824 and took 8 years to finish. As the years passed by different wings were added to accommodate extra prisoners.

The warders themselves actually lived inside the prison with their families in rooms just a little bigger than the cells.

When the gaol opened it was home to both male and female but of course in different wings.

In 1927 the gaol became a radio station for what is now the nation’s chief broadcaster.

Mitchelstown Cave

Mitchelstown Cave was discovered by Michael Condon in 1833.

He came by it while he was out quarrying limestone.

When he dropped his crowbar into a crevasse he moved some rocks to pick it up. Michael looked down into what was a large underground passageway.

Now people from far and near travel to Mitchelstown to see this world famous cave.

Walking in Michael’s footsteps you will come across massive caverns which are covered in fascinating dripstone formations.

You will also come across one of Europe’s finest columns called the Tower of Babel.

Concerts are performed underground as the acoustics are incredible .

Spike Island

Spike Island has been host to a 7th century monastery, a fortress and the largest convict depot in the world during Victoria times.

The island has a lot of history and has been inhabited by monks and monasteries, saints, sinners and convicts.

Today on the island, there is a 200 year old fortress which became a prison for over 2300 prisoners.

It was the largest prison in Ireland at the time and still is to this day.

Take a full guided tour of Spike Island from one of the most informative guides and learn about the history of the island along with visiting areas which are not opened to the public.

You will get to visit the punishment block where thousands of inmates were kept, the 1985 cells, the artillery gun park and much more.

Titanic Experience Cobh

In 1912, the Titanic set sail from her final pick up point in Queenstown which is now known as Cobh and it left the harbour with 1,308 passengers on board as she embarked on her final journey.

The tour here will take you back in time to learn about the history of Cobh and the Titanic.

Throughout the tour, there are many exhibitions and stories such as Jeremiah Burke and the message in the bottle he sent from Titanic.

When you check in to your tour you are told incredible stories of 123 passengers.

You will see Heartbreak Pier which was the last point of land contact for the Queenstown passengers.

Experience what it was like onboard the Titanic and learn about the different conditions between the 1st and 3rd class passengers.

The guided element of the tour lasts 30 minutes.

The final element of the tour is in the story room, here you learn the fate of you as a passenger and all other Queenstown passengers.

Toy Soldier Factory

One of Ireland’s best-hidden attractions. This family-owned Toy Soldier Factory has been established in Ireland since 1976.

It’s situated in the beautiful little village of Kilnamartyra, halfway between Killarney town and Cork City only a short distance from Macroom town.

A trip to their newly renovated visitor centre is both an educational and fun experience for everyone.

The factory produces hundreds of different black rubber moulds that allows you to make & paint your own figure.

From a model soldier, fairies, seasonal ornaments, chess sets, animals and other figurines in metal as many times as you wish.

As children growing up especially boys, we all loved our soldier collections, now is the chance to recreate that childhood passion.
