The word “Canberra” is popularly claimed to derive from the word Kambera or Canberry, which is claimed to mean “meeting place” in Ngunnawal.

Ngunnawal is one of the Indigenous languages spoken in the district by Aboriginal Australians before European settlers arrived.

In addition to local sporting leagues, Canberra has a number of sporting teams that compete in national and international competitions.

The best known teams are the Canberra Raiders and the Brumbies who play rugby league and rugby union respectively.

Both teams play their home games at GIO Stadium, which is the city’s largest stadium and was used to hold group matches in soccer for the 2000 Summer Olympics and in rugby union for the 2003 Rugby World Cup.

Canberra Aqua Park

Looking for an exciting, fun and safe activity for a couple of hours.

Canberra Aqua Park is situated in the coolest spot on Lake Burley Griffin.  The season runs from November to the end of January.

Promote teamwork, communication and a healthy lifestyle amongst your students in a fun and safe environment.

The Park has a full lifeguard patrol, the use of lifejackets is compulsory and provided by the Park.  A full risk assessment has been undertaken and the Park is fully insured so students and teachers can enjoy a fantastic outdoor activity in complete safety.

Australian War Memorial

A self-guided walking tour from the steps of the Australian War Memorial along the National Capital’s major commemorative way.  It is to honour all the men and women who sacrificed their lives during Australia’s involvement in keeping the world a better place.

The term ‘ANZAC’ stands for ‘Australian and New Zealand Army Corps’. The Anzac legend has its roots in Gallipoli and the First World War, when Australian and New Zealand soldiers landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey on 25 April 1915.

Anzac Parade is set along Canberra’s magnificent Land Axis.

The Parade was completed in 1965, to coincide with the 50th Anniversary of the ANZAC landing at Gallipoli.

To gain the optimum effect, the first memorial – the Australian Hellenic Memorial – should be approached from the back as if entering an amphitheatre.  All other memorials should be approached from Anzac Parade.
